Bipartisan Group of Members of Congress Pen Op-ed on Need for Aquaculture Expansion

“Now is the time to create a robust aquaculture industry to ensure food security and support our economy,” write Reps. Kat Cammack (R-FL-3), Ed Case (D-HI-1), Mike Ezell (R-MS-4) and Jery Carl (R-AL-1) in a new opinion piece that is running in The Hill this week.

Citing the benefits of the expansion in aquaculture in the U.S., including an increase in production of sustainable protein that supplements wild-capture fisheries and strengthens working waterfronts and coastal economies to the economic growth in agricultural states that would benefit as plant-based fish feed grows, the lawmakers outline why they are advocating for increased aquaculture production in American federal waters.

Reps. Cammack, Case, Ezell and Carl are co-sponsors of the bipartisan Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture (AQUAA) Act, championed by Stronger America Through Seafood, which would support the development of a sustainable marine aquaculture industry to complement our nation’s sustainable wild fisheries by putting in place a clear regulatory pathway that will get farms into the waters and spur investment in the industry.
