Stronger America Through Seafood (SATS) Supports Senate Legislation on the Seafood Marketing Act of 2022
Washington, D.C. – October 4, 2022 – Industry coalition Stronger America Through Seafood (SATS) praises Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md) for their recent introduction of the Seafood Marketing Act of 2022, that would reestablish the National Seafood Council as a vehicle to promote the consumption of seafood through 2027. Data has shown that when the National Seafood Council previously operated from 1986-1991, it had a positive impact on seafood consumption.
SATS commends Senators Wicker and Cardin for taking action to prioritize the education and promotion of healthy seafood in America. This move boosts awareness efforts about the positive health benefits of eating seafood, and how the seafood industry is critical to the U.S. economy.
SATS advocates for an expanded U.S. seafood industry through aquaculture, or fish farming, which would create locally grown seafood and create American jobs. The U.S. currently ranks only 17th in aquaculture production and imports up to 80% of its seafood. Federal legislation would enable America’s aquaculture industry to grow.
Senator Wicker is also a bill sponsor of the bipartisan Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture Act (AQUAA) Act (H.R.6258/S.3100), which was introduced in November 2021, to establish a clear, predictable permitting process for offshore fish farms in the U.S. The other bill sponsors include Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI), Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Reps. Steven M. Palazzo (R-MS-4) and Ed Case (D-HI-1). Cosponsors include Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL), Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), Del. Stacey E. Plaskett (D-VI-At Large) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS).
